TSBVI FALL PLANT SALE - RESCHEDULED to September 26 - 30

The school has moved the plant sale up one week because their plants are getting too big.

They started selling plants on Wednesday, September 26, and will continue every day through Sunday, September 30. Weekday sale hours will be 8:45am - 11:30am, and on Saturday and Sunday they will be out there from 8am-2pm. They are selling from the TSBVI greenhouse (on the other side of the west side fence near the TSBVI plot). All plants are $1.00.

The TSBVI students have been growing vegetable transplants and pansies are selling the following:

Broccoli - Pacman
Broccoli - Marathon
Cauliflower - Amazing
Cauliflower - Snowball
Cabbage - Ruby Perfection
Cabbage - Emerald Cross
Assorted Pansies

NATURAL EPICUREAN STUDENT-CHEFS VISIT SUNSHINE GARDENS

On Thursday Sept 20th, ten students from The Natural Epicurean cooking school visited Sunshine Garden for a field trip in conjunction with one of their training modules called "Current Issues in Food". The topic for the class was "Community Gardens."

They were brought to Sunshine by Charlotte Jernigan, one of their Chef Instructors, who has been gardening at SCG for twelve years. The students received a tour of the Chicken Co-Op from Emily Tsinger, had a mini-lesson on sifting compost courtesy of Mike plus six of his students from TSVBI and completed a mini work-day by helping to clear a half-plot that was changing owners, clearing a portion of aisle way and planting some starter plants and seeds. They met Kay McMurry, plot rentals, and Bob Ester, tool maintenance, and heard the history of Sunshine. They received an overview of the issues that face newly formed community gardens versus issues of a mature garden like SCG which maintains its own charitable projects using an all volunteer format.

The students were impressed by Sunshine! Three of the students vowed to immediately join the waiting list to get a half-plot to share.

The Natural Epicurean is located on South Lamar. NEACA is a 900-hour professional culinary program, supervised by the Texas Work Force Commission, resulting in a Certified Chef credential. The school also allows people from all walks of life to study along side the full time students on a modular basis. The five major modules are: Vegetarian, Vegan, Raw & Living Foods, Macrobiotic and Ayurveda. If you want to know more about their plant-based cuisine curriculum: http://www.naturalepicurean.com.

CATCHING UP WITH CITY OF AUSTIN URBAN AGRICULTURE

A little over one year ago the City of Austin created and funded a position to help guide the creation of urban farms and community gardens within the Austin city limits. The position is currently held by Jake Stewart.
