ALL GARDENERS MEETING THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 28 - 10:00 AM
Agenda items will include:
- New service hour requirement for TSBVI gardening activities
- 10x10 pilots available starting Aug 31
- Hose holders to be installed over next few months
- Volunteer opportunities at the garden
- New committees: Audit and TSBVI Liaison
Report from the Liaison Committee to Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired
The first meeting of the Liaison Committee to TSBVI was held August 21, 2010.
The following members attended: Linda Booker, Janet Adams, Sue Brownlee, Kathleen Cobb,
Craig Headley, Wayne Koestler, Michael Meyer, Nancy Siebert, and Jay Willmann.
Also in attendance was Michael Mobley who is a T.A. at the TSBVI. He will be working with
students at Sunshine this year. He will be taking over Mark Parades’ horticulture duties as well
as working with students at the TSBVI green house when it is completed. We will be working
closely with Michael as our TSBVI volunteer service program gets underway.
We began by identifying service jobs that can be done right now to get in that mandatory one
hour of TSBVI service. The first job is to get the TSBVI plots ready for planting in September.
Also, mowing, weeding and trimming outside our fences on the northern and eastern
sides around the garden perimeter (between the fence and the street) can be counted as TSBVI
service hours. To sign up to work on these plots or the perimeter, please contact me (Linda
Booker), and I will put you in touch with the committee member who is monitoring those tasks.
To avoid overlaps on these projects, please check in with me, when you want to sign up for an
hour of work, and let me know when you have completed that hour of work. The recording of
this one hour of service will be kept separate from other service hours.
This is the plan for now, but as we go forward, it may change. I will keep you posted.
Contact any of the committee members or myself if you have any questions concerning
volunteer service at the garden for TSBVI.

Five Reasons Sunshine Community Gardens is like a Business
- We have bills to pay for water, electricity and gas for lawnmowers (to name a few).
- We look for cost savings where possible and are very conservative in money
management.
- We cannot carry non-paying customers (gardeners) and still remain viable.
- We file tax returns for informational purposes, even though we don’t pay taxes.
- We value and protect our “brand” as one of the most well-known and successful
community gardens in Austin.
Five Reasons Sunshine Community Gardens in not like a Business
- We are a community and want all gardeners to succeed. We provide support and
backup as much as possible. We know that our gardening practices affect everyone else
in the garden, and therefore are considerate of our neighbors.
- The garden is everyone’s responsibility. We have no paid staff so we all must
contribute by service hours and active participation.
- We provide incentives for gardeners to clean up their plots before they leave. We want
the plots to be in good condition for the next gardeners.
- We receive donations and make donations for purposes related to our mission.
- Our tax returns and other reports are public information.
