LAST SCHEDULED WORKDAY THIS SEASON WILL BE SATURDAY,
JUNE 19
Cheryl Hazeltine and Katy Davis will be co-hosting the workday and will start early at 8:30
AM to beat the heat and wrap up at 11:30.
EARLY BLIGHT OF TOMATOES
Early blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria solani and flourishes in warm temperatures
and when leaves are wet for extended periods. It starts with small spots which grow larger
into circular lesions with yellow halos. The leaves will drop off. Eventually, the plant may
look like it has been burnt, and lesions will ruin the tomato fruit.
To control this disease in your garden:
- Rotate the planting area for tomatoes each session.
- Use varieties with resistance to Alternaria. Look for the “A” designation after the
variety name.
- When watering, try not to splash water from the soil on lower leaves of the plant.
Also, water at times of the day to reduce the length of time that leaves remain wet.
- Mulch. This protects the plant from the fungus in the soil.
- Use staking and spacing to encourage air flow.
- At the end of the season, completely remove old plants.

SUNSHINE GARDEN PRODUCE STAND
Ila Falvey with the help of Adiana, Ariel, and Jeremy is having a produce stand on Tuesdays
and Fridays, 11:30 am to 1 pm on the office porch. They are selling mostly tomatoes, with
all proceeds benefiting Sunshine Garden.
Gardeners are welcome to help by volunteering to "man" the booth and/or contributing their
excess produce. If you are interested or have produce you would be willing to contribute,
please contact: ila.falvey@gmail.com.
Thanks to Jola who has contributed some fine tomatoes and Craig who made the sign. The
purpose of the sale is to raise money for Sunshine (over $130 after only two days of sales) and
to provide customers with the joys of fresh produce. The supply of tomatoes from the garden
will mostly have petered out by July so sales from the produce stand will end at that time.
